Physics Numericals Made Easy: The Step-by-Step Method

Physics numericals are where most NEET students lose marks unnecessarily. The concept is clear, but the calculation goes wrong. Here is a methodical approach that eliminates careless errors.
The Five-Step Method
Every numerical in Physics should be approached in exactly five steps, in order, without exception.
Step 1: Read the question twice. Identify what is given and what is asked. Write it out explicitly.
Step 2: Choose the formula. Write the formula before plugging in any numbers. If you cannot recall the formula, derive it.
Step 3: Check units. Convert everything to SI units before calculating. This single step eliminates the most common source of errors.
Step 4: Substitute and calculate. Only now plug in the numbers. Write each step.
Step 5: Check your answer. Does the magnitude make sense? Does the unit match what was asked?
High-Yield Numerical Chapters
These chapters consistently produce numericals in NEET. Prioritise them:
- Laws of Motion โ friction, tension, pseudo force problems - Work, Energy, and Power โ conservation of energy questions - Rotational Motion โ moment of inertia, torque calculations - Current Electricity โ Kirchhoff laws, Wheatstone bridge - Electromagnetic Induction โ flux calculations, induced EMF - Modern Physics โ photoelectric effect, de Broglie wavelength
The Formula Sheet Trap
Many students spend time creating elaborate formula sheets. This is largely wasted effort. Instead, practise deriving each formula from scratch at least three times. After that, it becomes impossible to forget under exam conditions.
Timed Practice
Set a timer for every numerical you solve. In NEET, you have roughly 48 seconds per question. Most numericals should take you 60โ90 seconds maximum. If you regularly exceed 2 minutes per numerical, you need more timed practice.
In Summary
The students who score well in Physics Numericals are not the ones who know more formulas. They are the ones who execute a clear, consistent method every single time.
